WHAT IS LIFE COACHING?
by Laura Abernathy, Owner, Mission Accomplished Academy

I am sure you've been wondering, so let me take some time here to explain life coaching and the ethics and standards associated with the profession. I will also explain my style of life coaching.

International Coach Federation

According to the International Coach Federation (ICF), the organization that has organized and professionalized the coaching field, the philosophy of coaching is "honoring the client as the expert in their personal and professional life and believing that every client is creative, resourceful and whole". ICF believes it is the coach's responsibility to:

ICF defines coaching as an ongoing partnership that helps clients produce fulfilling results in their personal and professional lives. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance and enhance their quality of life. The client chooses the focus of the sessions, while the coach listens and contributes observations and questions. This creates clarity and motivates the client into action. Progress is accelerated through greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaches ask, "Where are you today and what are you willing to do to get where you want to be tomorrow?"

How is coaching different from counseling? Coaching focuses on achieving results in the now versus examining the past, however it can actually enhance the process of psychotherapy. It is okay to do both at the same time!

Coaching Ethics

ICF also sets a standard of ethics for coaches. Some of the highlights of those ethics include:

Laura Abernathy's Coach Training and Certification

ICF also regulates the accreditation of coach training programs and the certification of coaches. On November 14, 2002, I enrolled in the coaching program at the Institute for Empowerment Coaching (IPEC), which is accredited with ICF. I finished this program in October 2003 and received my certification on November 6, 2003. To learn more about IPEC, visit my Associate's Link page.

The Value of Coaching

I have given a lot of thought to the value of coaching. $300/month as an expression of appreciation for two hours of one-on-one coaching is a surprise for some. What I have realized is that the majority of people have a car payment and this average car payment runs about $300/month. The majority of people in America feel the necessity of a car in today’s world (ideally a GREEN car!) because we need one to maintain our life. Most use them for commuting to work or business, doing errands and grocery shopping, medical needs and of course, FUN! A car is a vehicle that gets us from point A, where we are, to point B, where we want to go. Wouldn’t you agree that a coach does this very same thing for a person? After all, the word “coach” has its root in the German word for “wagon”. To see our life coach as a mode of transportation to get us from who we are today, to who we want to be 3, 6 or 12 months from now, is valid! The time is arriving when most people will have a life coach and will consider the fee, and the relationship, a vital investment in themselves that truly appreciates with time. Which, by the way, does not hold true for our cars!

If you feel $300/month is truly too much for your spending plan right now, life coaching can be effective with less than two hours each month. You might consider reducing your one-on-one coaching from 2 hours per month to 1 hour per month, which would reduce the fee to $150/month. I also have some clients who receive coaching via email support for $25/month. I know that if you truly want to bring life coaching into your life, we can find a way to make it work for you financially.

Laura Abernathy's Style of Life Coaching

Since I enjoy gardening so much, I like to view coaching as "Tending a Garden of Souls". In this garden, it is my goal to bring all of my clients into their beautiful, full-bloom stage. A greenhouse is a place of accelerated growth. I see my coaching service as a greenhouse, where I create an environment that is conducive to strength and growth for my clients. My goal is to support my clients in achieving their optimum state of balance and joy so they can live out their ideal lives and share with the World the gift of their unique, special True Self.
